On December 6, 2006, Congress passed a new law that expands
the visa opportunities for professional and top amateur athletes and coaches to
participate in athletic events in the U.S.
Previously, only athletes who perform at "an internationally
recognized level of performance" could get a P-1 ("Performer") visa. The
new law broadens those eligible for P-1 visas to include any athlete employed by
a major professional sports team or associated minor league team, certain top
amateur athletes and coaches, and professional and amateur ice skating
performers. Click here
